So many questions about our living room spindle chairs over the past few years. I’ve always loved this classic style of chair and then when I went to work for Lola Interiors we used these chairs in many of our projects as a living room staple. So I knew when we built our last house that I needed a pair!
The beloved CR Laine Spool Chair and Spindle Chair weren’t in our budget so I went looking for an alternative with a fabric and wood finish I could live with! I finally found a pair I loved from Birch Lane and after sitting on the fabric samples for months I went with the classic ticking stripe! They’ll always work with our decor somewhere in our home! We rarely steer too far from traditional blue and white!
Now that this chair style is becoming more and more popular, I thought I’d share a few buying options to help you on your hunt!
BEST
CR Laine Spool Chair or Spindle Chair
Price: $1,800+
Likes: Incredible quality – will last you a lifetime! Also love that you can choose from any of CR Laine’s wood finishes, welt (piping) options, tapes, and fabrics to create a truly unique custom chair! The possibilities are endless.
Dislikes: The only dislikes are the current turnaround time and the higher price tag. But if this one’s in your budget – you really can’t go wrong!
PS. Ballard Designs also makes a beautiful spool chair that’s around $1,300. If you fall into this category, I’d spend the extra couple hundred dollars and purchase a CR Laine chair over the Ballard option. I prefer the quality of CR Laine over Ballard for upholstery.
If you’re an Amelia Island local – stop by Cape House to sit on CR Laine for yourself and check out all of the fabric and finish options available!
BETTER
This is my chair! I personally love it and find it really comfortable! My husband likes it too. These are the closest dupe (in terms of quality and appearance) that I could find online to my beloved CR Laine chairs. We’ve had them since 2018 and they’ve held up as our primary living room armchairs. They’ve also held up to my toddler climbing all over them every day for years! ๐
We chose the white leg (which is much more cream – heads up!) with the cruise adrift fabric. The classic ticking stripe fabric was a solid choice! It will always work with decor somewhere in our home and hides a multitude of stains! You can order fabric samples directly from the website before purchasing.
Price: They were around $600 each a few years ago but are currently on sale for as low as $570 depending on your fabric selections! Surely if you sign up for the Birch Lane newsletters you’ll end up with a coupon!
Likes: Low price point for a quality armchair! Ability to choose from several fabric options and two wood finish options. They were made and shipped pretty quickly!
Dislikes: Not as many fabric options to choose from.
GOOD
If you love the look of a spool chair but won’t be using it functionally, these are a steal! I can’t attest to the quality but I’d imagine for the price it’s not great. I don’t love the back on this one either but you can’t have it all for under $300! This is a great option for an office accent or a bedroom chair that doesn’t get sat in too often!
Price: $269-$301
Likes: Price!
Dislikes: Quality concerns, no customization options (only comes in three color ways) & don’t love the pillow back on this one.
